Nursing Assistants work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to assist with nursing care to patients as directed by the nurse. Nursing Assistant functions include: personal hygiene, comfort and safety measures, assisting with activity, and simple nursing procedures outlined in the job responsibilities. The Nursing Assistant assists with maintaining a clean and safe environment for the patient. The Nursing Assistant has the ability and willingness to follow written and verbal instructions and work under close supervision. Effective verbal and written communications skills are necessary.
Will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. CNAs in the Care Center may be expected to carry a load of 10-15 patients. CNAs working in Home Care may be exposed to unpredictable client home environments.
Required Skills
No formal education is required to b! e a Nursing Assistant (NA) in the Hospital (on the job training will be provided). To become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) requires 75 hours of formal classroom and clinical time. Certification is required to work in Sanford Vermillion Care Center. This requirement is also established to work as a CNA in Dakota Home Care with the additional requirement of 16 hours of classroom education specific to care in the home setting.
Non-certified NAs require no license. CNAs must be certified and registered with the South Dakota Board of Nursing.
Non-certified NAs have no specific continuing education requirements other than those required by their specific nursing department. CNAs require 12 continuing education units/hours/year in order to maintain certification.
