The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pine forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly western hospitality. VA BHHCS provides primary and secondary medical and surgical care, along with residential rehabilitation treatment program (RRTP) services, extended nursing home care and tertiary psychiatric inpatient care services, for veterans residing in South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. VA Black Hills is part of VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).

DUTIES:
Responsible for providing the full range of clinical support! and a member of the interdisciplinary team care planning and delivery of care process by providing feedback to the RN and interdisciplinary team. Takes appropriate actions in response to patient emergent situations. Accurately documents patient information in the medical record or paper flow sheet as appropriate. Provides care for patients in isolation. Provides routine hygienic/activities of daily living care, performs actions targeted to the maintenance/restoration of skin integrity. Collects patient specimens, administers a variety of comfort measures. Takes vital signs after completion of orientation and competency validation. Performs finger stick blood glucose using blood glucose monitor, ambulates patient with/without assistive devices and provides passive range of motion as directed by the RN. Uses appropriate lifting/moving/transfer techniques/devices and utilizes standard precautions for all patients which include following hand hygiene practices
and pro! cedures.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREM! ENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
One year above high school with courses related to the CNA occupation.
Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year which resulted in attaining certification as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
Preferred Experience:
One year of progressive experience equivalent to the GS-4 level

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific
assignment.
In addition, the candidate must demonst! rate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (d) below;
OR,
Education.
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelorÂ's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelorÂ's degree; AND

Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
Examples include tube feeding, tracheostomy care and suction, straight catherizations, care of patients with complex medical and behavioral diagnoses, and non-sterile dressings.

Ability to communicate orally with patients, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel to include serving as a preceptor to new CNAs
by assisting ! with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing pra! ctical experience while in a clinical setting.

Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance.
For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Physical Requirements:
Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking, with regular and recurring pushing, lifting, stopping, bending and stretching. While providing patient care, the employee must practice good body mechanics to prevent injury to self and the patient.
