The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pine forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly western hospitality. The VA BHHCS provides primary, surgical, behavioral health, community living center (nursing home care), and domiciliary (residential rehabilitation treatment program - RRTP) care for Veterans residing in western South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. VA Black Hills is part of VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).

As a Nursing Assistant in Extended Care and Rehabilitation at VA Fort Meade, SD you will perform a wide range of resident personal care, diagnostic services, treatment and charting activities on a regular and continuing basis in a Community Living Center. The incumbent delivers safe and individualized nursing care to residents with multiple and complex needs and performs in such a way as to promote a sense of worth and dignity for the individual. He/she provides care that addresses physical, emotional, rehabilitative and spiritual needs of veterans. Provides competent nursing tasks in a variety of situations to meet residents needs for personal hygiene, physical comfort, ! nutrition, elimination and prevention of skin breakdown while participating in a resident centered treatment team. The incumbent should possess basic understanding of the resident centered care, understanding of simple scientific facts and principles, a broad spectrum of technical skills, adaptation of procedures to meet individual resident needs, and recognition of the relatedness of residents' behavior to their physical condition.
Location: This position is located in the Community Living Center in the Geriatrics and Extended Care Service Line at Fort Meade, SD
Work Schedule : Full time with rotating shifts to include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
ÂU.S. citizenship.
ÂThis position requires a pre-employment physical examination.
ÂProficient in spoken and wr! itten English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level OR successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or courses in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position being filled, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, geriatric or operating room technician.
Note - Applicants who are qualifying based on experience must possess at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to work at the next lower level, which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the work of the position (definition below).
DEFINITION OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : One year of experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically ! in or related to the work of the position. To be credible, experience should have been gained at the next lower grade level. Qualifying specialized experience includes non professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aide performing duties such as:
 Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
 Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
 Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
 Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: R! ehabilitation/restoration experience in long term care. Certification p! referred..
