The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pine forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly western hospitality. VA BHHCS provides primary and secondary medical and surgical care, along with residential rehabilitation treatment program (RRTP) services, extended nursing home care and tertiary psychiatric inpatient care services, for veterans residing in South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. VA Black Hills is part of VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).

DUTIES:
The incumbent functions in the
role of
Diagnostic
Medical
Ultrasounographer.
Serving in this position requires possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities
and other "core competencies" associated with current
diagnostic medical ultrasonography
.
The position requires the
possession and application of knowledge involving diagnostic ultrasound examination of multiple areas of
the body; assisting in biopsy procedures and vascular studies. 'The technologist receives only general
guidance from the radiologist as he/she will not always be in close proximity. Emergencies will be managed
by the technologist with the support of emergency response teams.
Depending on skill and experience the incumbent may provide education or perform administrative tasks functioning as a lead ultrasonographer.
Additional imaging modalitie! s are desirable (e.g. diagnostic radiography, MRI, CT) as is PACS admin! istrative experience.
THIS POSITION IS LOCATED AT FORT MEADE, SOUTH DAKOTA, BUT TRAVEL TO OTHER LOCATES MAY BE NECESSARY.
HOURS: Full-time, 40 hours per week. Subject to rotating tours; weekends and holidays included and on-call status.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification - It is highly preferred that applicants be certified in diagnostic medical ultrasound by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
Education - Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic medical ultrasound program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) as evidenced by an associate's or bachelor's degree, is highly preferred.
! Preferred Experience/Grade Determinations:

At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade (GS-7) level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided the overall knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct diagnostic ultrasound examinations in complex and unusual cases.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to perform diagnostic ultrasound examination on multiple areas of the body, including, but not limited to, the abdomen, pelvis, transvaginal, chest, small parts, thyroid, breast, and scrotum.
2. Ability to perform vascular studies such as vertebral, renal artery, aortic aneurysm, portal-systemic shunts, etc.
3. Ability to assist radiologists with biopsy procedures determining the location, depth, and required needle angle for the lesion to b! e sampled.
4. Ability to assist in surgical procedures and flu! id aspirations.

At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade (GS-8) level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography.
2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
4. Ability to manage and superv! ise employees.
5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
