The Registered Nurse in the Pediatric ICU is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to pr! ovide individualized nursing care. The nurse assumes the responsibility for the outcome of nursing care during a specified work period. The nurse receives assistance from the full scope of nursing expertise. The nurse has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate age-related patient protocols relating to the critically ill neonatal/infant, pediatric and adolescent patient.
Following a competency based formal orientation, competence and performance is expected. This includes general nursing skills related to the neonatal/infant, pediatric and adolescent patient as out-lined in the Orientation Skills checklist. Opportunity to be involved in the flight program. Cares for critically ill patients with diagnoses of medical, trauma, Neuro, and open heart surgical patients.
The RN functions within the scope and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules. The Sanford Nursing Practice recognizes the Scope an! d Standards of Practice (2004) and the Code of Ethics for Nurs! es with Interpretive Statements (2001) as published by the American Nurses Association as the foundation for nursing care delivery.
When students are providing patient care, treatment, and/or services as a part of their training, any/all employees may be asked to supervise the students.
Required Skills
Graduation from a NLN or AACN accredited nursing program is strongly preferred. Graduate from an approved nursing program is acceptable. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing strongly preferred.
Currently licensed with the applicable State Nursing Board and/or possess multistate licensure privileges as required by position. Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications (i.e. - ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NRP, etc.). Basic Life Support (BLS) must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained during the length of employment per American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines. Must be certified in Pediatric Adv! anced Life Support (PALS) within one year of hire date and maintained during the length of employment, per AHA guidelines. Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC), a one-time requirement, must be taken by the end of one and a half years from hire date. Functions within the legal RN scope of practice.
